ERF members bag more than expected
An energetic group of staff members from Esperance Regional Forum and South Coast NRM treated it as business as usual when they took to West Beach as part of the Business Clean Up Day 2011 in March. The group covered the area from First Beach through to Twilight Beach including the sand dunes, cycleway and road side. Community Implementation Officer and Cleanup Coordinator Kathy Ashby said that the main items collected were beer bottles and cans, food wrappers and takeaway coffee and food containers. However Kathy added that few plastic bags were collected suggesting that the ‘Esperance – Too Fantastic for Plastic’ campaign has sent the right message. “But there were plenty of catalogues that were meant for letter boxes, building site waste and odd things such as toys and a mobile phone” she said. In some places there was dumpings of up to 40 or 50 bottles and cans where clearly a drinking session had taken place and the rubbish just left behind. “It is really hard to believe people would do that”, Cindee Hage, one of the group said, “I can’t imagine even throwing just one thing out of my car window especially in such a beautiful place like Esperance.” With the long weekend coming up, the group encourages people to get out and about to enjoy our wonderful environment but reminds them to take their rubbish with them. Business Clean Up Day was part of Clean Up Australia Week being held across the country with the aim to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. Clean Up Australia Day was first started by solo yachtsman Ian Kiernan in 1989 and in the past 20 years Australians have collected over 200,000 tonnes of rubbish.
